“For over twenty years, I have devoted myself to painting Dunhuang murals onto individual silk scarves,” Fan Yanyan says. “I believe that creating silk scarves along the Silk Road is the most meaningful thing I could ever do in my life.”
Chinese silk artist Fan Yanyan has been connected with Dunhuang in Gansu Province for many years, focusing on exploring, creatively designing, and promoting Dunhuang culture. Through a series of artworks full of rich symbolism and philosophical depth, she has helped Dunhuang culture travel beyond borders and shine on the world stage.
Passion Driven by Love, Excellence Rooted in Craftsmanship
Fan Yanyan has loved art since childhood. After graduating from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 2000, she traveled alone to Dunhuang to study its culture. Over more than two years, the rich and splendid heritage of Dunhuang touched her deeply — not only because of its abundant cultural relics but also because of the parts worn away by time. This unique perspective awakened a mission in her heart: she wanted to tell more people about the beauty of Dunhuang culture and traditional Chinese culture, so that more people would understand and appreciate them. She searched for a medium through which this culture could be passed down and integrated into everyday life, reaching both domestic audiences and the world.
In 2002, while working as an art designer at a silk scarf import-export company in Beijing, a sudden inspiration struck her: why not use silk itself to tell the story of Dunhuang? Fan saw silk’s softness and resilience as reflecting the gentle yet tenacious character of the Chinese people. Silk, a key witness of the ancient Silk Road, carries countless stories and spirits of Chang’an, Dunhuang, and the world in its fibers. That insight led her to further explore Dunhuang’s culture and history through this medium.
In 2003, Fan launched the “Dreamlike Dunhuang” series, her first signature collection inspired by Dunhuang culture. This series incorporated motifs from flying celestial beings, decorative ceiling patterns, music, and dance — each with unique features showcasing the profound depth and beauty of Dunhuang culture.
In 2009, she formally established her brand, themed around traditional Chinese and Silk Road culture. Over the years, she has created hundreds of patented designs across multiple series such as Dreamlike Dunhuang, Return to Chang’an, Custom National Gifts, and Meet Central Asia, expanding into clothing, accessories, handcrafted originals, silk leather goods, home décor, and more.

“Every piece I create has a story behind it, shaped by my cultural understanding and life insights,” Fan says. Her works have been highly praised both in China and abroad for their cultural richness and unique artistic expression.
Art Through Time and Innovation
Symbols such as flying celestial beings, the nine-colored deer, and decorative ceiling motifs are treasures of China’s outstanding traditional culture. Fan integrates these elements into her designs using fine lines and rich colors, vividly expressing the unique charm of Dunhuang. For example, in her piece Free and Unrestrained, the image of flying celestial beings conveys the graceful motion seen in murals, reinterpreted with modern design techniques to make the figures appear as though they could dance out of the scarf itself.
This artwork was selected as part of an artistic chip accompanying the Shenzhou 10 spacecraft and was presented as a special gift to astronauts. At an international cultural exchange event, a French fashion blogger wearing one of Fan’s scarves described the experience as “as if this scarf transported me through time to the ancient East, revealing a mysterious and romantic cultural beauty.”
In addition to scarves, Fan designs umbrellas, pillows, jewelry, and other cultural products. She also created the world’s first silk necklace inspired by Dunhuang Mogao Cave murals — from color to pattern, every detail reflects profound Dunhuang cultural heritage.

Chinese Culture Meets the World
Fan’s Dreamlike Dunhuang works are already widely recognized internationally. Motifs once confined to Dunhuang now travel globally through silk art, becoming important cultural bridges for understanding Dunhuang culture. “I use silk as a medium to present and express traditional Chinese culture and Silk Road culture through original works that carry contemporary meaning and aesthetic attitude, helping the world better understand and love Chinese traditional culture,” Fan says.
From Chang’an to Dunhuang, and from Dunhuang to the world — her works have been exhibited in over 20 countries and regions, including at the United Nations Headquarters and major international museums. Her art has engaged cultural exchange and deep dialogue in places such as Abu Dhabi, Liverpool, and Bishkek, inviting global audiences to experience the fusion of culture, art, craft, and commerce.

Through these dialogues across regions and borders, her silk artworks bear witness to countless harmonious interactions, strengthening cultural understanding. Fan hopes to continue presenting the rich and diverse elements of Dunhuang’s heritage, engaging with the world so that it sees an even more complete and colorful Dunhuang.
